If you exchange a lot of stuff with you friends through pendrives , then there’s a great chance that your pendrive might get effected by a virus or something. Now,turning off the autorun feature ensures that that virus doesn’t execute itself automatically on your system. This way, you can clean it before you open the pendrive. So to turn the autorun of portable drives off ,do this:

  • Click Start –> Run
  • Type in “gpedit.msc” without the quotes.
  • Browse to Computer Configuration –> Administrative Templates –> System.
  • Scroll down and you will find an entry by the name “turn off autoplay”.
  • Double click it. Then in the settings tab, click on enabled option and then turn of all drives in the dropdown list.
  • Ok and you’re done.

This one’s an easy tweak. you don’t really need to know your system that well to do this. Anyways, this is how you go about it:

  • Type “regedit” without the quotes.
  • Browse to HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT-> CLSID-> {645FF040-5081-101B-9F08-00AA002F954E}.
  • Now on the right side, you should see a list. Double click on the “(default)” file and change the name to whatever you want.
  • Reboot and the name will be changed.

This thing works, this thing really really works. I’ve tried it and now, m loving it :D .

  •  Click Start –> Run
  • Type in “msconfig”.
  • Go to Startup in the tabs above. You will see a list of applications that startup when your system starts.
  • Now observe them, if you dont know what they are, then Google them, but most importantly, do not change the setting of any of the system applications( Audio Softwares, Antiviruses, Graphic Adapters and system files)
  • The applications which are ticked are the one’s which start on startup. Disable them only if you know that they are not required there. Like,Yahoo Messenger need not be there, so you can disable it if you wish to.
  • Once done diabling the ‘not-required’ items, Click Apply and the computer will then ask you to restart. Do so and the system should reboot faster.

This is one of the simplest and the coolest tricks that i can remember of. What you can do with it is that you can hide a folder on the desktop itself or at any other location without actually changing its attributes to hidden. How ? Well, Keep Reading !

  • First create a new folder somewhere on your hard drive
  • When you name it hold down “Alt” and press “0160″. This will create an invisible space so it will appear as if it has no name.
  • Then right click it and select “Properties”.
  •  Select the tab “customize” and select “change icon”. Scroll along and you should see a few blank spaces. Click on any one
  •  Click OK. Now when you have saved the settings the folder will be invisible.

For those who were curious to know this, or the ones who are now willing to know this, here’s how you go about it :D

  • Click Start –> Run
  • Type cmd to open a command prompt.
  • At the prompt, type systeminfo

Scroll down the list of information to the line that says System Up Time.
This will tell you in days, hours, minutes and seconds how long the system has been up.

PS: This command only works in XP Pro, not in XP Home. You can, however, type net statistics workstation at the prompt in Home. The first line will tell you the day and time that the system came online.
